What is forced sterilisation?

The expression ”forced sterilisation” is referring to the Finnish* law that requires a transgender person to be over 18, unmarried and have proof of being sterile in order to change their official gender marker. A transgender person is someone whose gender does not match with the one they were assigned at birth.

The law is very problematic regarding human rights. The erasure of forced sterilisation has been demanded even by The United Nations and their special rapporteur on torture. There's also an active private member’s motion** going on, demanding that forced sterilisation has to be taken off the law. It has signatures from several different parliamentary groups.

*Similar laws exist in other countries as well.
** A law proposal made by a member of the parliament.
